VASKA EMANUILOVA GALLERY

МISSION AND АCTIVITIES

Vaska Emanouilova Gallery is a museum centre and exhibition space for contemporary art and young artists. Its mission is to expand the knowledge and access to art and culture by working towards the preservation and rationalisation of the historical heritage and the implementation of a bridge between the generations. In addition to the permanent exhibition of works by Vaska Emanouilova, the gallery maintains three programmes, within which temporary exhibitions are displayed. The museum programme is connected with the sculptress’ donation and the archive of the gallery. The programme features exhibitions of historic artists in Bulgarian art, and includes the conducting of research and realisation of publications. The programme contributes to the continuous update of the archive, which has kept documents about the personality and work of Vaska Emanouilova and the history of the Bulgarian visual arts since 2007. The main exhibition activities of Vaska Emanouilova gallery are connected with two programmes for contemporary art, which show the current trends and topics in the work of mostly young artists. The Sculpture programme was established in 2008 and aims at the continuous expansion of the notion of sculpture in search of its points of intersection with architecture, technologies, the object world of contemporary culture, the public and social space. The Meeting point platform emerged in 2003 within Sofia City Art Gallery. With the opening of Vaska Emanuilova gallery at 15, Yanko Sakazov Blvd., the exhibition space of the programme moved to the new address. It grew into a platform that seeks the outlines of the new generations of artists and strategic works for the presentation of the topical art. Vaska Emanuilova gallery operates on a network principle by partnering with a number of organisations and institutions in the field of art, education, architecture, etc. Its main exhibition activity and the contemporary art programmes are connected directly with the collection of Sofia City Art Gallery. Since 2012, based on a public-private partnership with Societe Generale Expressbank, the gallery has purchased works by young artists for the contemporary art collection of Sofia City Art Gallery (SCAG). In this way it became the first public institution in the country that collects woks by young artists for the only collection of contemporary art in Bulgaria that exists to date, namely that of Sofia City Art Gallery.
