AFTER ONESELF
KALINA MAVRODIEVA
Kalina Mavrodieva’s exhibition at Vaska Emanouilova Gallery is the next step in the young artist’s recognizable approach to painting – her urge to extrapolate and synthesize certain visual excerpts and to turn them into borderline entities. The exhibition includes works created by the artist over the last year, such as idyllic-abstract landscapes from the Troyan section of the Balkan Range, executed in oil paints and pencil. Combining them with the macro visions from the sea, the exhibition maps the author’s view and marks the progress in her research.
The conceptual framework of the exhibition is provided by Elin Rahnev, who was invited by the artist to reflect on her work and to create a poetic piece. Hence, his poem is central to the exhibition and besides being a translation of the visual language into textual one, it also pays homage to artist Kolyo Karamfilov, who was both the painter’s and the poet’s friend.
Kalina Mavrodieva was born in 1988 in Troyan. She received a master’s degree in Painting in the class of Prof. Andrey Daniel at the National Academy of Arts in Sofia in 2014 and specialized in painting at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. In 2015, Kalina received the Collectors’ Award in the ESSL ART AWARD CEE 2015 Competition, and in 2021 was awarded the UBA distinction at the National Youth Exhibition.
The exhibition is part of the program Meeting Point, which since 2003 has been a forum launched by Vaska Emanuilova Gallery which offers young artists the opportunity to explore and present their work in the museum space. The artist has mounted the exhibition with the financial support of the Creative Initiatives Programme of the National Culture Fund.
